Please Note: As this is a living creature, you are not sent live plankton with the original order. A redemption card for live plankton is included with this purchase for you to order the dinoflagellates when you’re ready for them. They are sent with no additional charge or fee.

After receiving your plankton, you must immediately put them in the water. Over the next several days, you will need to ensure that the dinoflagellate plankton receives low to moderate amounts of light during the day. After 5 to 7 days, starting feeding them plankton the included nutrients.

“Back in the mid 90’s as a single guy in my mid 20’s, I joined a couple of marine biologists and some fellow nature lovers to observe the birthing of California gray whales in Magdalena Bay, a protected wildlife sanctuary off the Pacific coast of Baja, Mexico.  We camped on a small, uninhabited island for 5 February days and nights, kayaking in the bay and riding skiffs out into the Pacific to get as close to these magnificent whales as possible.

One night, after having a little too much to drink, I foolishly wandered away from the campfire on my own and decided to take a dip in the bay. To my amazement the water around me exploded in a brilliant blue aquatic fireworks display. This was my first experience with bioluminescent plankton.  

The Bio-Orb is a constant reminder to me of that special time. Once you receive the plankton, It will take about 5-6 days to get them on their natural  circadian rhythm of 12 hours of daylight (NOT direct sunlight) and 12 hours of darkness. But you’ll know when they are ‘ready’ because a lightning-like flash of brilliant blue light will fill the orb when you grab it. Gently sway it from side to side to continue to activate their unique communicative powers.
